About this deal

Typical for Sony, the body is hard and has many sharp corners making it less comfortable than other brands. In addition to some subject specific lenses, I also like to have something that covers a broad range that can be an everyday lens when I’m not sure what I’ll be shooting. What’s not so good is that all its new features – and the A6400 has come a long way since the A6000 – are accessed electronically via menus, screens, dials and function buttons. The A6400 has a super-sophisticated AF system, high-speed continuous shooting and powerful 4K video features, but it’s all buried inside this pretty but generic body. I set 1/125 as the minimum shutter speed for people photos. At 1/60 and slower often you'll get some blur as people are talking and laughing. The Sony 35mm f/1.8 has a nice compact design that pairs well with the a6400. The fast f/1.8 aperture allows you to shoot in dark scenes, even with moving subjects.

With an equivalent focal length of 36mm, the Sony 24mm f/1.8 is a perfect partner to the Sony a6400. Three times faster in-camera USB charging. I measure 1,468 mA USB current input versus 480 mA input with older cameras. I let the camera go to ISO 102,400. You might want to set a lower maximum, like 25,600 or 12,800, for landscape shots, or use ISO102,400 for action. It's your choice, but remember it's always better to have a sharp, brainy shot than a clean blurry one. Use the highest ISO you need to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop your action.

If this happens too often then restrict the area of the LCD over which you can select AF areas, or turn it off completely. On the high resolution of the a7RIII I do notice some loss in sharpness, but it’s fine when shooting at 24mp on the Sony a6400. A new optical design that includes one aspherical element contributes to consistently high resolution from the image centre right out to the edges, while two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively suppress chromatic aberration.

Use the top dial to swap among images while zoomed, and if viewing through the finder, touch the rear LCD to scroll around a zoomed image. For bloggers, vloggers and independent content creators, the Sony A6400 is very good. Its still image quality is first rate, its 4K video is even better, and its 180-degree screen and eye-detect AF are handy for single-handed video capture. Even so, its high-tech image capture is poor consolation for its five-year-old design and limited external controls. It feels as if it was designed by the same guys who design Sony's VCRs and stereo receivers: it's all flat surfaces and 90º edges, compared to Canon who makes curvy cameras that feel soft and comfortable in-hand.
